Masaya Department is one of fifteen (15) departments and two (2) autonomous regions in Nicaragua. It is by far the smallest department in geographic size, and sits between Managua Department, Granada Department, and Carazo Department.
The capital of Masaya Department is the city of Masaya, which is the roughly the third or fourth largest city in the country. It sits directly between the cities of Managua and Granada with Simon Bolivar Avenue providing quick and easy access to both cities.
Other than the city of Masaya, another big attraction for Masaya Department is Masaya Volcano National Park. The national park and volcano are extremely easy to get to and provide amazing views and a highly educational experience with an active volcano. The crater lake and the views from the crest of the crater are unbeatable.
