Carazo Department is one of fifteen (15) departments and two (2) autonomous regions in Nicaragua. It is located along the Pacific coast and is home to the Chacocente Wildlife Refuge.
The beaches along the Pacific coast tend to be populated primarily by locals, and foreign tourists are a rare sight. The locals are friendly and welcoming, but don't expect the accomodations and trappings of a more tourist driven area.
The capital of Carazo Department is the city of Jinotepe, which is a fairly small town, however it is home to a regional extension of the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN).
The municipality of San Marcos in Carazo Department is home to one of the best Nicaragua Universities, Ave Maria University - Latin America Campus.
